The brother of Cooper Koch has spoken out against backlash towards Cooper playing the lead in Netflix’s Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story after getting called out on Instagram. Whilst Cooper Koch has no social media, his brother Payton posted saying how proud he was of Cooper for his first major acting role and all the acclaim he’s garnered. When someone commented calling out the ethics of Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez story, Payton replied saying how Cooper Koch feels regarding the brothers amid the backlash and the handling of a sensitive true crime case.
Writing in the comments of Payton Koch’s post about his brother Cooper Koch, a comment from @graveburgers calls out Cooper Koch and says “I’m only writing this here because Cooper does not seem to have any social media (how convenient), but if either of you care about abuse victims, you will show your brother this comment. Erik Menendez has released a public statement revealing how distraught he is at his and his brother’s portrayal in this disgusting show. Do you know how pissed off Erik has to be to make a public statement? He hates the media. He says (and any decent person would agree) the show is a mockery of abuse victims and their trauma and a total disregard of the truth of these two brothers’ real story.
“Imagine being depicted f*cking your own brother in the shower. How sick would you feel? Imagine being severely abused your whole life and then being made out to be a spoilt brat? The real Erik and Lyle are mortified. Do not ever say you care about abuse victims when you participate in such trash as this show.’
Referring to a picture in Payton’s post showing Cooper Koch by a mirror with pictures of Erik Menendez all over it, @graveburgers continues “The audacity of Cooper to have photos of Erik everywhere on the mirror like a shrine when he’s participating in a show that drags his name through the mud. Does anyone in this show not have any morals? We, in the Menendez Supporters community and the abuse survivors community, are horrified by this show. Completely horrified.”
Payton Koch responded to the comment, giving insight to how Cooper Koch feels regarding the Menendez brothers case. Payton writes “I won’t speak for Cooper, but I will say that he cares immensely for the boys and stands with them and all victims of abuse. He did everything he could to ensure their stories of abuse were seen on screen and I think in episode five, it is abundantly clear where he stands. Actors are only vessels for the writers/producers of the show. Any true story portrayal is going to be tough, but please trust me when I say he does care about them and their story.
@graveburgers then responded, praising Cooper Koch and the performance he gave in episode five of Monsters. Episode five is a one take episode fully focussed on a conversation between Erik Menendez and his lawyer, Leslie Abramson. Payton Koch continued “I totally understand and hear you. I’m glad you were able to see Erik in episode five and I can only hope that people’s perspectives are shifted to sympathize with the boys, even though the last few episodes do not portray them in the best light. Thank you for sharing and know you are not alone in the way you feel.”
